A Complete Guide to Finding and Applying for Scholarships

Scholarships listed here fall into two broad types, and it's worth knowing which one you're looking at before you apply. Government and foundation programs — Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD, the Commonwealth Scholarships — run their own independent selection process, often in parallel with (not instead of) a separate university application. University-specific scholarships are awarded directly by the institution, usually as part of or an add-on to your admission application there. A third, smaller category — corporate and professional-body scholarships (engineering associations, banks, industry foundations) — tends to target a specific field of study rather than any student, and is worth checking if your subject has an established professional body.

Funding terminology is worth reading carefully rather than assuming. Fully funded means tuition plus living costs — a monthly stipend, flights, sometimes health insurance or a research allowance. Partially funded or "tuition waiver" scholarships cover tuition only, leaving flights, housing and daily costs to you. A stipend-only award (more common for research fellowships than scholarships) does the reverse — it pays a living allowance but assumes tuition is covered some other way, often because the recipient already holds a funded PhD position. We show the funding type on every card specifically so you can filter this before spending a weekend on an application essay.

How to Approach Applying

A realistic scholarship search rarely succeeds on a single application. Building a shortlist of 4-8 scholarships in your field and degree level, then tracking each one's specific deadline and document requirements in one place (a spreadsheet works fine), is a far more reliable strategy than searching one at a time as deadlines approach. Your personal statement's core argument — why this field, why now, what you'll do with the degree — can usually be reused across applications; what should change each time is the opening and any section that references the specific program's stated priorities or a named faculty member whose work you'd want to study under.

Because most major annual scholarships (Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD, the Commonwealth Scholarships) reopen on a similar schedule every year, a listing that shows "Deadline passed" here isn't a dead end — it's usually a preview of when next year's cycle will open. We keep expired listings visible and clearly marked for exactly this reason, rather than deleting them once their current cycle closes.
