What Counts as an Event Here, and Why It's Worth Your Time
We keep the bar for what counts as an "event" here deliberately narrow: academic conferences, hackathons, case competitions, workshops and fellowship info sessions with a real, dated registration deadline. Generic recurring webinars or meetups without a clear start date don't fit the deadline-driven format the rest of this site uses, so we leave those out.
What an event is actually worth to your applications varies by type — a hackathon or case competition gives you a concrete project to cite, an academic conference is genuinely valuable if you're presenting research (less so if you're only attending), and a fellowship info session is mostly useful for direct access to program officers and alumni. Weigh that against the time cost before committing to one, especially for anything requiring travel.
Both in-person and virtual formats show up here, and we note when an event is fully virtual or hybrid, since that materially changes whether travel funding or a visa is even a consideration.
